The New Hot Man: Hefty, Old, Black

Posted by The MILF

Menswear designers have gone berserk in their Paris show castings, and everyone is digging it. At Yohji Yamamoto (left): old guys, black guys, hefty guys. At DSquared2: mostly non-white models. And as reported here last week, at Vivienne Westwood: the beef-a-licious Sergio Lo Re. The Cut’s Amy Odell finger-crosses that the women will attempt to top the dudes but, as the HRC experience so clearly demonstrated, our society dislikes old ladies almost as much as it dislikes ladies with a big caboose or a strong point of view. I’m a glass-half-full girl, but I just don’t see it. Designers: Please, prove me wrong.

Bonnie Fuller: The Heather Locklear of Magazines

Posted by The MILF

Painting a sympathetic portrait of Bonnie Fuller was a really nice thing for David Carr to do while she works in relative obscurity on building a mystery media project from scratch — a first for the “can’t-get-no-respect” turnaround specialist. As Carr points out, Fuller inspires particularly poisonous ire among media types. Along with the usual jealousy factor, I have to wonder if so many people hate her because she is an unapologetically unglamorous, money-grubbing workhorse who brings out the basest instincts — “101 Racy Little Sex Ideas!”; “Celebrities: They’re Just Like Us! — of not only the reading public but also of class-conscious editors. By baldly appealing to our lowest common denominator, she implicates everyone in the tacky trenches of tabloid culture and it feels really slimy down here.

The MILF Majorly Scoops The Times’ Natasha Singer

Dear Natasha Singer,

I was hoping your 789-word Sunday Styles rehash of the entry I wrote 11 days ago about Bazaar’s over-the-top coverage of the Estee Lauder fragrance, Sensuous, would at least shed light on WTF is going on over there. Alas, not even a quote from Glenda Bailey, Steven Gan or a beauty editor. What gives? I’ve come to expect such thorough snooping from The Times’ resident beauty skeptic.

Love,
The MILF

Jessica Pressler & Chris Rovzar Still Envious of Emily Gould

Posted by The MILF

Remember New York Magazine’s story about Gawker and the rage of the creative underclass? Well, nymag.com bloggers and their faithful commenters — many of them staff members — are beginning to reek of creative-underclass rage themselves, with their Emily Gould career-watch. First there was the nasty screed about Gould’s first-person Sunday Magazine story a few weeks ago. And now comes a snarky entry regarding her book proposal. Fascinated and appalled, New York Intel editors Chris Rovzar and Jessica Pressler just can’t seem to wield their most powerful weapon against Gould — that is, ignoring her. Envious as they may be, they know they can’t ignore a player who’s gaining major establishment cred. Cue bird-flip … pronto.

Trannies Take Over the Tennis Court

Posted by The MILF

It seems fitting for Pride Weekend that today I got creamed in my local ladies tennis tournament — by a woman who used to be a man. I learned after my loss that the transgendered dominate this particular competition. Last year, my opponent succumbed in the ladies’ final to yet another woman who used to be a man. I won’t venture to speculate on whether trannies have an unfair advantage on the tennis court. All I know is, this one beat the skirt off me.

At left, Renee Richards, the pro who blazed the transgendered tennis trail.
