The Times Flips Feminists the Bird Following BlogHer Blow-Up

Stalking is a style issue, according to The New York Times. A story about “In His Sights,” an anonymous memoir about a decade of being stalked by a former boyfriend, ran in Thursday Styles, below the fold (and below the ridiculous short-shorts men’s wear article). I would understand the Styles placement if the pseudonymous Kate Brennan were a celebrity or a victim of sensational, Dominick Dunne-level crime. But this memoir is about an ordinary woman suffering through a prevalent, hard-to-prove phenomenon.

Considering all the trouble writer Andy Newman went through to verify the facts of the actual memoir — not another James Frey! — The Times could have transformed this story into a major front-page investigation about the state of stalking in America. It’s the type of thing the pre-Murdoch Wall Street Journal would have run in the quirky, front-page middle column. Alas, female editors at top news organizations are too worried about appearing hard-bitten to fight for better exposure for stories about crimes against womanity. Shame on them.
