How Some Moneycrunchers Might Save American Motherhood
Posted by The MILF
I am psyched about the GDP! Not because it’s rising — which it is — but because it could be a major agent in changing how mothers are valued in this country. The gross domestic product measures wealth apparently, but it has incorrectly evolved in the minds of people who pay attention to these things as a gauge of the country’s well-being, according to this super-interesting, economics-for-dummies story in The Times. Some economists are trying to repair the quality-of-life indiscrepancy by — drumroll, please — incorporating unpaid work like raising children. These adjustments could actually raise the GDP, which is nice and all, but the piece I’m psyched about is this: by putting a price on child-rearing, such work becomes tangible to economists and policymakers — and that could score the ladies mandated maternity leave. How cool is that? Economics is hot!
