I-Want-It Wednesday: Agnes B. and Ryan McGinness for “Dress Art” for Another Magazine

Posted by The MILF

If this isn’t the best MILF look you’ve seen, then I want you to email me whatever it is that you think is better. ‘Cause this rocks. The alluringly practical silhouette is as French as its creator, Agnes b., and the baroque surfer-skater print is as whimsically cool as its creator, artist Ryan McGinness. McGinness has shown at the Agnes b. gallery, and the pair were matched up again for Another Magazine’s completely gorgeous portfolio in which fashion designers produced a dress in collaboration with an artist of their choice. Although I would feel hesitant about the partial-mime look on the playground, I am loving the elegant pragmatism of powdery, painted-on white gloves. Fingerpaint is suddenly no problem at dinner parties!

Linda Wells’ Big Kiss-Off to the Beauty Industry

You know you’re powerful when you can tear the gorgeously manicured fingernails off the hand that feeds you. In her Editor’s Letter this month, Allure’s Linda Wells rips the beauty industry a new one for excessive packaging. But instead of making the waste an environmental issue, she smartly employs an argument far more potent to an industry whose existence relies on vanity: It’s passe. She quotes Diana Vreeland — “Elegance is refusal” — and Mies van der Rohe — “Less is more” — and redefines packaging meant to evoke a “present from Harry Winston” as a “pimped-out Hummer.” What a burn! But what’s so brilliant about Wells’s argument is that it obfuscates the deathly ecological role of her own industry, for magazines are really just objects of physical waste that ostensibly encourage more waste via shopping. Especially a beauty magazine. I mean, can you remember the last time you finished an eye-shadow compact?
