Bazaar Totally Off Target with Chinese

Posted by The MILF

What is it with Bazaar portraying Chinese-American beauties as archery aficionados who wear extremely large feathers in their caps? First, there was Lucy Liu in an Olympics spread in July. And this month there’s Helen Lee Schifter — who, it should be noted, loves guns, not bows and arrows. If Bazaar chose to capitalize on a stereotype like kung fu, the magazine would at least have accuracy on its side. But archery appears to be one of the few things that the Chinese didn’t even invent — and you’d think Bazaar’s Chinese-Filipino Creative Director Stephen Gan would actually be cognizant of all that.

MILFY Monday: Andrea Jung, CEO of The Avon Ladies

Fashion and beauty companies give a lot of lip service to empowering women, when they actually take advantage of their insecurities. But one company really, truly empowers women and that is Avon. As I learned in a Times “Saturday Interview” with CEO Andrea Jung, Avon is like a corporate Grameen Bank, offering women economic self-sufficiency through the company’s signature direct-sales model. Like all cosmetics companies, Avon’s growth lies in the developing world. But with a lot of hedge-fund wives suddenly needing to contribute in order to keep the kids at Choate, I’m wondering if the Avon Lady is poised for a massive Stateside comeback!
